FAQ

General Badminton Equipment Questions

Q. I’m a beginner, what racket should I get?

There are many things to consider when buying a badminton racket.

However, it’s not a very complicated process. Here are 2 important things to consider:

Identify your play style, whether you’re an offensive or control player.

After that, narrow down your options according to your budget, preference for brand, and lastly specification (whether it’s a head heavy, balance, or head light racket).

If you’re just a beginner starting out, we suggest going for a user-friendly racket, such as an even balance and medium stiffness racket frame.

If you need professional advice from our team, simply send us a message!

Q. I’m a regular player, what is the best racket for me?

If you have been playing badminton, you would be familiar with your playing style.

Attacking players would prefer head heavy rackets

Control players would prefer even or head light

Hard hitters would prefer stiffer rackets

If you need professional advice from our team, simply send us a message!

Q. What strings are good?

Whilst Yonex leads the innovation for badminton strings, most brands have different types of strings.

Basically there 2 main types you can consider when choosing a string:

Thick strings, or 0.70mm – More durable. Less feel and repulsion

Thin strings, or 0.61mm – More repulsion, control and feel. Less durability.

Choose a string according to your preference for durability and repulsion.

Most professional players use strings between the 0.65mm and 0.70mm range. Among the popular Yonex badminton strings for professional play are the Yonex BG66 Ultimax (0.65mm), Nanogy 98 (0.66mm), BG80 (0.68mm), and the BG65 Titanium (0.70mm).

Q. What tension is good for me?

Every player would prefer a different string tension.

This would depend on how strong you are in badminton terms. Stronger players would prefer higher tension while players who are less strong would prefer lower tension.

For an intermediate player who plays regularly, the average hitting tension is 24-26lbs.

Based on our experience, this tension range is most optimised for regular intermediate players. That being said, you’ll still need to work out what tension suits you best by testing different string tensions over time.

Make sure you decrease or increase your string tension gradually by 1 or 2 lbs max.

While professional on the elite international circuit prefers an average of 30lbs, we do not recommend tension this high if you are social or club player as it may cause injuries and result in less performance.

Q. Are grips important? What grips are recommended?

Yes grips are important! Choice of grip is entirely up to you, there are 3 types: thick replacement grip, thin overgrip, or towel grips.

Stick to the one you’re most comfortable with.

Q. Is weight important? What weight should I choose?

Racket weight could make a small difference to your game. Different players would have a different preference for weight.

As a guide:

3U or 88 grams: Normal weight (most professional or advanced players prefer this weight category)

4U or 83 grams: Lightweight (great for beginner to pick up their skills, good for intermediate players as it still provides reasonable amount of power while having a lot of control)

5U or 78 grams: Super Lightweight (good for ladies and control players. You get very fast racket handling but lack power, more popular among beginners and intermediate players. Only the control type advanced players might go for this weight category)

Q. Does the racket brand matter? Should I pick a particular brand over another?

If you’re selecting between the top brands like Yonex, Victor, or Li Ning, the brand doesn’t really matter because these top brands produce innovative and top quality badminton rackets.

If you’re picking smaller budget brands, be sure to do your research well as you may end up getting a low quality racket with lower quality materials.

Q. Should I get a badminton shoe, can I stick with normal sports shoes?

Unlike running, movement around the badminton court involves lots of quick, lateral or sideways movements.

Normal runners or soccer shoes are designed for you to move forward.

Badminton shoes are designed for more lateral or sideways movements and offers a lot of protection at the sides.

We often have customers looking for badminton shoes only after they injured their ankle.

Injury can be avoided by getting an entry level badminton shoe, it would give you much more protection as compared to a normal sports shoes.

Q. How do I choose a good badminton shoe?

Higher end badminton shoes give you better support and performance.

In our opinion, Yonex and Victor is the leading brand in badminton shoe technology.

The main difference between an entry level badminton shoe and the top of the range:

Cushioning: More shock absorption and footwork repulsion for performance. Entry level shoes often have one layer of cushioning whereas you could find up to 4 layers of cushioning in the top of the range, regardless of which brand you choose.

Stability: This is a strong shoe base often represented by a carbon graphite plate at the bottom of the shoe.

Lateral support: Very strong heel support as well as the lateral side to prevent ankle injuries.

Be sure to choose a badminton shoe that meets your badminton needs.

For example, if you’re a beginner, you wouldn’t need a top of the range badminton shoe because you wouldn’t be needing those top features. If you have a previous injury and you’re a beginner, you might want to consider top of the range features to protect and prevent further injuries.

If you need help selecting a pair of shoes, speak with our professional team here.

Q. Where should I start (shopping) if I am a beginner?

If you’re a beginner and you’d like to experience badminton in a professional environment, start shopping with a decent badminton racket.

You’ll need at least a full graphite badminton racket. You’ll find a range of full graphite rackets from big brands like Yonex and Victor on our website, for below $100.

If you need more information in selecting a badminton racket, kindly send us a message and our expert team will get back to you with some advice.

Q. What gear should I get if I am an intermediate player?

Badminton Racket:

If you’re an intermediate player who plays regularly, you should consider getting a high mid range badminton racquet, or a top of the range badminton racquet. If you’re on a budget and wish to explore options in the middle range, be sure to look for a high modulus graphite badminton racket. These are high middle range rackets that uses good quality graphite material in the frame, which offers excellent repulsion and allows you to string at a slightly higher tension, if required.

Badminton Shoes:

When playing at an intermediate level, you would more likely be moving around the badminton court more often than beginners. Depending on the intensity and ‘personal conditions’ (if you had an injury before), we recommend at least a middle range or high range badminton shoes which provides good lateral support and cushioning. If you had an injury, you might want to consider a top of the range badminton shoes which offers you top range support, stability, and cushioning to prevent further injuries. If you’re on a budget, a middle range badminton shoes would often suffice.
