Badminton FAQs
General Badminton Equipment Questions
There are many things to consider when buying a badminton racket. However, it’s not a very complicated process. Here are 2 important things to consider:
1. Identify your play style, whether you’re an offensive or control player.
2. Narrow down your options according to your budget, preference for brand, and specification (head heavy, balanced, or head light).
If you’re just a beginner starting out, we suggest going for a user-friendly racket, such as an even balance and medium stiffness racket frame. If you need professional advice, simply send us a message!
If you have been playing badminton, you would be familiar with your playing style.
- Attacking players: Head heavy rackets
- Control players: Even balance or head light
- Hard hitters: Stiffer rackets

Whilst Yonex leads innovation, most brands have different types of strings. There are 2 main types:
Thick strings (0.70mm): More durable. Less feel and repulsion.
Thin strings (0.61mm): More repulsion, control, and feel. Less durability.
Most professional players use strings between 0.65mm and 0.70mm. Popular choices include Yonex BG66 Ultimax (0.65mm), Nanogy 98 (0.66mm), BG80 (0.68mm), and BG65 Titanium (0.70mm).
Every player prefers a different tension depending on their strength.
Intermediate Average: 24-26lbs. This range is optimised for regular intermediate players.
While professionals often use 30lbs+, we do not recommend tension this high for social players as it may cause injury and reduce performance. Always increase tension gradually by 1-2 lbs.
Yes, grips are important! The choice is entirely up to you. There are 3 main types:
- Thick replacement grip
- Thin overgrip
- Towel grips
Stick to the one you feel most comfortable with.
Racket weight makes a difference. As a guide:
3U (88g): Normal weight. Preferred by most pros and advanced players.
4U (83g): Lightweight. Great for beginners to pick up skills, and intermediate players looking for control.
5U (78g): Super Lightweight. Very fast handling but lacks power. Popular among beginners and ladies.
Unlike running (forward movement), badminton involves quick lateral (sideways) movement. Normal runners lack side protection.
Badminton shoes are designed to prevent ankle rolling. We highly recommend getting at least an entry-level badminton shoe to avoid injury.
Higher-end shoes offer better support and performance. Key features to look for:
- Cushioning: Shock absorption. Top range shoes have up to 4 layers.
- Stability: A strong base (often carbon graphite) to prevent twisting.
- Lateral Support: Strong heel and side support to prevent ankle injuries.
Racket: Look for a high-modulus graphite racket. These offer excellent repulsion and handle higher tension.
Shoes: Consider mid-to-high range shoes. If you have previous injuries, invest in top-range shoes for maximum stability and cushioning.
